John Galliano is going to Zara. Yes, you didn't think so. The Galliano who recently had TikTok searching for the secret to porcelain makeup from the Margiela show will now be designing seasonal collections for the Spanish mass market giant. My brain is still trying to process this.

This isn't even a one-time collaboration for the sake of quick hype. They signed a two-year contract, and Galliano starts working this year. Zara is literally saying: “We don't want to be just fast fashion anymore, we're going premium.” The designer's task is to pull them to this higher level.

And do you know how he's going to do it? The official statement says he'll be digging through Zara's archives (do they have archives? Okay, let's write it down), cutting them up, and reassembling them into completely new things. It sounds like some kind of stylish Frankenstein, and I'm really ready to watch it.

Zara has long been testing the waters with big names. They've had drops with Stefano Pilati (ex-Saint Laurent creative), Narciso Rodriguez, Ludovic de Saint Sernin, and Samuel Ross of A-COLD-WALL. But inviting Galliano? That's a whole other level of outrageousness. It's like inviting an arthouse director to shoot a video for TikTok.

We'll see the first results of this experiment in September. They promise that there will be a bunch of his “iconic motifs.” I'm already visualizing these complex silhouettes and cuts somewhere on a nearby shelf with basic T-shirts.

Let me just remind you of this man's story for those who missed it: he was the artistic director of Givenchy and Dior, developed his own brand John Galliano, and in recent years worked magic at Maison Margiela. He left at the end of 2024, slamming the door so that the echoes can still be heard – his final Artisanal show under a Paris bridge was instantly dubbed iconic.
