How to save burnt blonde: a cheat sheet of ingredients that really work

The experiment showed two things: light shades categorically do not suit me, but the quality of the hair can be preserved, even if you use a powerful oxidant on it, informs Ukr.Media.

Blonde is like buying a used BMW X5: it looks impressive, the status warms the soul, but you have to immediately accept that you will have to invest cosmic sums in repairs. Bleached hair is a “part with a huge mileage”, and ordinary washing of the head is no longer enough.

I have naturally porous and almost always wavy hair. For such a texture, chemical lightening is a test shot. Peroxide completely washes out lipids from the structure (the glue that keeps the cuticle closed). The scales rise, the hair begins to catastrophically lose moisture, and the surface becomes rough. In the mirror, you see not a Hollywood wave, but brittle, fluffy hay, which also beats with static electricity.

During that time, I tried a ton of cans and learned one truth from talking to colorists: damaged hair cannot be “cured.” It can only be properly prostheticized.

To make that porous washcloth look like bouncy curls again, it doesn't need marketing hype about alpine chamomile extract. It needs thick, oily textures and heavy chemical artillery.

Cheat sheet: what to really look for on a mask label

We turn the jar over and look at the composition. We are interested in three groups:

Proteins

Bleached hair is empty inside. To fill it, you need proteins, but not just any kind. If the protein molecule is too big, it will just lie on top of the hair and wash down the drain.

What to look for: The word Hydrolyzed. Only hydrolyzed (broken down to small molecules) proteins are able to penetrate the cortex. Look for Hydrolyzed Keratin, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Silk. If the word Hydrolyzed is not there, the can is useless.

Cationic surfactants

Damaged hair has a negative charge. We need positively charged molecules that will firmly adhere to the damage in the cuticle and act like a band-aid.

What to look for: It sounds like a Latin curse, but these are the ingredients that save your hair. Cetrimonium Chloride, Behentrimonium Chloride, or Behentrimonium Methosulfate (BTMS). They're the ones that untangle tangles that you'd otherwise be crying over with a comb.

Lipids

When the holes are mended with protein, the hair needs to be softened and made elastic, otherwise it will simply break off due to excessive stiffness.

What to look for: Don't be fooled by the pretty words “With Macadamia Oil” on the front. Look for oils in the first five ingredients: Butyrospermum Parkii Butter (Shea), Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil (Argan), Olea Europaea Fruit Oil (Olive).

How to apply correctly

I generously distribute a thick protein mask along the entire length, and then put on a thermal cap (if you don't have one, a regular bag and a hot towel will help). The heat softens the texture and penetrates much deeper. I leave it on for ten minutes – this is enough for a dead blonde. If you overdo it with protein, your hair will become stiff as wire.

And the main mistake that almost everyone makes: the mask must be covered with conditioner. The mask works inside the hair, repairing it, while the conditioner smoothes the cuticle and “seals” all this richness inside, preventing it from washing out during the first rinse.

Of course, no jar will turn blonde into pristine silk – for visual shine, you will still have to add leave-in creams and silicones. But returning elasticity to porous hair, removing broken zigzags at the ends and gathering fluff into normal waves is an absolutely real task. The main thing is to read the small print on the back, not the large letters on the package.
