The problem is not only about teeth and gums: bacteria that remain between teeth can affect the general condition of the body. This is confirmed by dentist Irene Esteve: “Dental floss allows you to clean the spaces between teeth – areas where a brush cannot reach. This is where caries and gingivitis often begin, which can spread to bone tissue. Proper use of floss prevents gingivitis, improves breath freshness and reduces bacterial load. The oral cavity is a gateway for many bacteria, and in active infections, such as periodontitis, they can enter the bloodstream and affect other organs.”

Floss, tape, or interdental brush

The choice of interdental hygiene tool depends on the individual characteristics of the oral cavity. Dental tape is effective for narrow interdental spaces, typical of young people with good gum condition. In cases of gum recession, bone loss, the presence of implants or after previous dental interventions, an interdental brush may be more effective.

Regarding the timing of use, the expert advises starting with interdental cleaning and then brushing your teeth. This order allows the fluoride from the toothpaste to better penetrate the spaces between the teeth and enhances its protective effect.

Electric or regular toothbrush

Studies show that electric toothbrushes are slightly more effective at reducing plaque and gingivitis than manual toothbrushes, but the difference is modest. Proper technique and regular brushing are still key to maintaining oral health. A well-executed manual toothbrush can be quite effective, while an electric toothbrush helps to reinforce good habits.

Rinse aid: a mandatory step or not

Mouthwash is not a mandatory step in hygiene. The basis remains proper daily brushing of teeth and interdental cleaning. Mouthwash should be used as an additional tool according to needs: fluoride for caries prevention, chlorhexidine during inflammation, special formulas: to combat bad breath or sensitivity. It is important to take into account individual needs, as there are no universal recommendations. Using products without real need can have the opposite effect.
