Classification of perfume ingredients: the Scentree website redesigned

Scentree, the free tool dedicated to perfume ingredients, has undergone a major update. Founded in 2019 by Maxime Baud, it has just got a makeover with a new graphic charter. The database has also been expanded to complete the information related to the natural materials and synthetic molecules available in the market. A perfect opportunity for us to meet the independent website’s founder and discuss the changes aimed to make knowledge on perfumes even more accessible.

Premium Beauty News – Which type of public does the website target?

Maxime Baud – Mainly professionals, whether they be perfume companies, journalists, or students. In 2024, Scentree boasted 140,000 visitors per year, from all around the world, including 30% in France, 10% in the US, and 10% in Brazil. This figure is expected to rise in the next few years, because of this new update and my working full time on the project.

Premium Beauty News – What were the changes intended for?

Maxime Baud – Scentree has been adorned with a more contemporary design adapted to the digital world’s visual standards. It features a new logo, a new interface, and is meant to make the user experience seamless. The graphic charter marks a new era for the website, since I am now 100% dedicated to this project, which was launched in 2019 when I graduated from the ISIPCA School. Being fully involved makes it easier to broaden the list of ingredients and develop the database with new information. Plus, I can consider further innovations for the future.

Premium Beauty News – What type of new information will users find on the website?

Maxime Baud – The olfactory classification of ingredients remains the same. But the database offers new information. Until now, professionals could find botanical and chemical details on ingredients, but also information about farming practices, extraction methods, and sourcing (perfume companies, producers). From now on, the 51st amendment of IFRA standards will be fully integrated to the website, for all ingredients. Other enhancements include the database, which now displays environmental certifications, like UEBT’s, to highlight advertisers’ competitive assets.

Premium Beauty News – Talking about advertisers, what is Scentree’s economic model?

Maxime Baud – From the beginning, my main goal was to offer free access to knowledge. So, the website was designed with the support of sponsors, including Cinquième Sens, ISIPCA, Nez, and IFRA. But it also depended on partnerships with suppliers whose products are referenced, so they get visibility, like Mane, Quosentis, Biolandes, BASF, Van Aroma, Synarome, and Synthite.

This update makes the website more attractive, as an increasing number of companies now wish to be featured. So, there will soon be more ingredient partners. The funds resulting from these partnerships will help develop other features and turn Scentree into an ever-more innovative and qualitative platform.
