The Brazilian personal hygiene, perfumery and cosmetics industry continues on its globalization track. According to the Brazilian Association of Personal Hygiene, Perfumery and Cosmetics Industry (ABIHPEC), foreign trade (imports and exports) grew by 9.4% in 2022 to reach 1.52 billion US dollars, compared to 1.39 billion in 2021.
Exports rise by 10.9%
Over the period (January-December 2022), Brazilian exports of cosmetic and hygiene products amounted to 776.5 million dollars, representing a growth of 10.9% compared to 2021 (USD 700 million).
The top three categories that Brazil exported in 2022 are: hair products (23.7%), soaps (19.1%) and oral hygiene products (11.6%).
Latin America was the main destination for these exports. The top five importers of Brazilian cosmetic and hygiene products being Argentina (18.7%), Mexico (11.1%), Colombia (10.7%), Chile (10.1%) and Paraguay (6.6%).
The United States, Portugal, the United Arab Emirates and the Netherlands also stand out as the trading partners to which Brazilian cosmetics exports recorded the highest growth in value and volume during the year. In all these cases, hair products topped sales.
Trade surplus
Brazil’s cosmetic exports grew by 7.6% in 2022 to reach 741 million dollars (compared to 688.4 million in 2021).
The trade balance of the Brazilian cosmetics sector thus ended the year with a surplus of USD 35.5 million (compared to USD 11.6 million in 2021, an increase of 206%). This is the third consecutive year, since 2010, where the value of Brazilian cosmetics exports exceeds the value of imports.
