Nexdot, a company specialising in applications resulting from research on Quantum Dots, is introducing a new varnish applied on glass bottles for protecting fragrances from UV rays. This innovation makes it possible to reduce the use of additives in the formulations, without risking deterioration of their qualities. It is marketed by Stoelzle Parfumerie & Cosmétique under the name Lumi Coat.
Molecules used by perfumers and cosmetics manufacturers, particularly those of natural origin, can rapidly degrade when exposed to ultraviolet radiation. Without protection, a perfume, for example, would lose its colour following prolonged exposure to sunlight, and its olfactory signature would be modified. Therefore, formulators usually have to add UV filters and other stabilizers into their product formulas to protect them.
Invisible and ultra-protective
Capitalizing on more than 10 years of research on quantum dots, Nexdot has created and innovative varnish that integrates nano-crystals able to absorb A, B and C ultraviolet rays, without any impact on the visible light spectrum. The bottles where the varnish is applied therefore remain perfectly transparent, maintaining full optical clarity.
While UV-blocking varnishes are sometimes used to reduce exposure to ultraviolet rays, their effectiveness is not sufficient to allow a significant reduction of additives in formulations. Dubbed UVltimate, Nexdot’s technology blocks UV light with an industry-leading efficiency offering the highest level of UV protection currently available.
When applied to the bottle, this advanced protection prevents colour changes and fragrance degradation, eliminating the need for traditional UV additives such as avobenzone, and supporting cleaner, more sustainable formulations. It aligns with the growing demand for “clean beauty” by reducing the need for stabilizing molecules such as UV absorbers, dyes, and preservatives.
Industrial implementation
Nexdot’s UVltimate solution has been successfully tested in an industrial environment on more than 1,500 bottles at Stoelzle Parfumerie & Cosmétique, in France.
Marketed by Stoelzle under the name Lumi Coat, Nexdot’s innovative technology is applicable to any bottle shape and compatible with other decoration techniques. « Lumi Coat integrates seamlessly with various glass packaging designs, offering brands flexibility while ensuring the highest level of UV protection », says Stoelzle.
Previewed by Stoelzle at Luxe Pack Monaco, UVltimate / Lumi Coat technology will be showcased by Nexdot at the Cosmetic 360 trade show on October 16 and 17, 2024 in Paris.
