A dermatologist spoke about the connection between haircuts and hair growth

Many people mistakenly believe that regular visits to the hairdresser accelerate the appearance of new hair. The Guardian debunked this myth, Ukr.Media reports.

Cutting the ends of your hair does not affect the biological processes in your scalp in any way, as hair is dead tissue. Professor of Dermatology Desmond Tobin from University College Dublin points out that hair follicles are located a few millimetres beneath the skin.

“Removing what is above the surface in no way affects what is happening in the follicle underneath,” the expert notes.

Genetics determine the rate at which hair grows, which is approximately one centimeter per month. Using scissors cannot change this natural rate.

The illusion of thickness is created by the hair thinning towards the ends, and a straight cut makes it appear thicker. Professor Tobin compares this process to trimming a hedge: the shape becomes neater, but the inner branches do not start growing faster.

For those who dream of long hair, the scientist recommends not getting a haircut more often, but focusing on preserving the fiber structure.

“It is recommended to maintain hair fibers in their original state with the least aggressive chemical or thermal exposure,” the specialist advises.

Excessive use of hair dryers and chemicals leads to brittleness, which is why the length simply does not have time to increase.
