The world says goodbye to Hollywood's most eccentric mom, Catherine O'Gara

The Hollywood Hills are crying, and we are with them. At the age of 72, the incomparable Catherine O'Hara, the woman who taught us that leaving a child at home is the beginning of a Christmas adventure, has left this world.

The sad news was confirmed by Variety, citing the actress's manager.

According to insiders, the legend's heart stopped on Friday, January 30, at her home in Los Angeles. They say the illness was short-lived, but Katherine, like a true lady, passed without unnecessary drama – although we know that on screen she was a drama queen.

Half a Century of Laughter and Emmys

O'Gara's career spans 50 years of pure drive, starting with the Canadian sketch show SCTV, where she won her first Emmy and proved that women can joke better than men.

Then there were the roles we rewatch every year: “After Hours,” “Beetlejuice” (where she sang songs at a haunted table) and, of course, “Home Alone.” Her role as Kate McCallister, Kevin's mother, made her a familiar face to anyone who has ever panicked through an airport.

Moira Rose and New Horizons

In recent years, Katherine has taken the internet by storm again, reprising her role as the eccentric Delia Dietz in the sequel to Beetlejuice (2024). And of course, we'll always remember her as Moira Rose from Schitt's Creek.

Catherine was born in Toronto to a boisterous Irish Catholic family (which explains a lot about her comedic talent). She has been married to director Beau Welsh since 1992. The couple has two sons, Matthew and Luke, whom she, unlike her character, never forgot at home.
