The film “Michael” 2026: the path of the King of Pop in Antoine Fuqua's new masterpiece

Hollywood has finally brought Michael to the big screen, and it looks like the riskiest bet of the decade. It's being produced by Graham King, the guy who hit the jackpot with Bohemian Rhapsody. It seems he's cracked the formula for the perfect musical biopic and is now printing money. The media is already writing in droves that he's right again. I'm watching pop culture try to digest this gigantic premiere.

From the Jackson 5 to world domination: plot and cast

What do they want to show us? A classic story, but with a twist: from the children's band “The Jackson 5” to the moment when Michael becomes literally an icon. His nephew, Jaafar Jackson, plays him. And no, this is not another star offspring who just got lucky with his last name. I've seen the trailers, and his plasticity is frightening with its accuracy. The cast is generally assembled in such a way that you can give out statuettes in advance: Colman Domingo (who seems to be playing everywhere now, and that's great), Miles Teller, and Nia Long.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by John Logan (who created Gladiator), they decided to focus on separation from a toxic father (a topic my generation of therapists would definitely appreciate) and the epic 1988 Bad tour.

A Complex Legacy and the “Shadow of Accusations”

Now for the obvious problem. Making a movie about Michael Jackson in the era of new ethics is like walking blindly through a minefield. On the one hand, the court completely acquitted him back in 2005. On the other hand, there is the documentary “Leaving Neverland,” and Twitter forgets nothing. The discussions are just burning now.

The creators desperately tried to maintain a balance between genius and cancellation culture. But the lawyers on set seemed to be working harder than the writers. Due to a bunch of old confidentiality agreements, the Jordan Chandler story had to be cut. The script was torn apart in the process, a bunch of additional filming was done in 2025, the budget skyrocketed by tens of millions, and the premiere was postponed to 2026.

Why is it worth watching the movie “Michael” in 2026?

Because he's a phenomenon. Whatever one may think of the past, his monthly streaming numbers are breaking records and will outlive the careers of half the newcomers. Music critic Ludovic Hunter-Tilney is already comparing his skill to Fred Astaire—sounds like the ultimate accolade.

They say the heirs hardly interfered in the process and left the film crew alone.

Analysts are betting that the box office will break a billion bucks. Freddie Mercury's record is under serious threat. But whether we will see the real Michael behind all this glitter, lawyers and rewritten scripts is an open question.

Do you believe that because of censorship and family interference, we will see a real person in the film, rather than an edited icon?
