I've put together a selection of movies where maternal care looks like a noose. After something like this, you want to go out onto the balcony, exhale, and be glad that your family chat is just a message about discounts at Silpo, and not what's happening on the screen, informs Ukr.Media.
Black Swan (2010)
If you thought ballet was all about tutus and grace, look at Nina. Her mother is not just a support, she is a shadow that fills every corner of the room. The woman once did not become a star and now literally “presses” her daughter to realize her own dreams. It physically hurts to watch, because you see not a dance, but a child crumbling to pieces under the weight of other people's expectations.
Escape (2020)
This is a real trap. Chloe is confined to a wheelchair, and her mother Diana is her only connection to the world. It would seem that she is a holy woman, so much patience. But as soon as the girl starts to want even a drop of independence, you understand: this concern is a way of control. Some scenes become really scary, because the most terrible enemy is sitting opposite and smiling, slipping you another pill.
August: Osage County (2013)
This movie is one continuous scandal at the dinner table. Meryl Streep plays a mother who simply masterfully knows how to hit where it hurts the most. She knows everything about her children and uses this knowledge as a weapon. There are no monsters or maniacs here, only family people who know how to hate as much as anyone else. You will think after the movie: “Thank God, I have a normal family.”
White Oleander (2002)
Ingrid is beautiful, intelligent and completely self-centered. For her, her daughter is more of an addition to her own ideality. When her mother ends up behind bars, Astrid has to survive on her own, and this is the path from adoration to the realization that your mother is simply a broken person. A very aesthetic, but sad film about how difficult it is to break away from your parent's influence, even if it destroys you.
Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisters (2002)
Here it all starts with an insult: the daughter said something wrong in an interview, and the mother decides that now they are enemies. This is about those parents for whom the “picture” for the neighbors is more important than the feelings of their own child. The film is about how silence accumulates over the years and how difficult it is then to just start talking without reproaches.
Maternal Instinct (2018)
A story about how the friendship of two neighbors turns into hell after a tragedy. This is a very subtle thriller. You don't understand until the last moment whether it is a real threat or just one of the women has gone crazy with grief. It is very clearly shown how quickly “perfect motherhood” can turn into paranoia, where every look seems suspicious.
Sharp Objects (2018)
Although this is a series, it is impossible to miss Adora. She is the embodiment of cold. She demands perfection, adherence to rules, and complete obedience. The main character's return to her home is like walking through a minefield. What is terrifying here is not the murders in the city, but how a mother can slowly poison the lives of her children without even raising her voice.

What is worse for a child: the mother's cold indifference or this kind of “suffocating” love-control?
