Chewing gum at work: how one habit can ruin your reputation in 5 minutes

In the morning on public transport, in the office, at meetings with friends – the sounds of chewing gum have become a familiar part of our daily lives. No one denies that chewing gum is a great way to freshen your breath, which becomes especially relevant when communicating with others.

Chewing gum has always been considered indecent in most public places. Someone might raise their eyebrows in surprise when they see you chewing gum in a restaurant or during an important interview. However, over time, with the change in worldview and the development of the film industry, chewing gum has become acceptable in various scenarios. After all, thanks to this habit, you can show different qualities and level of knowledge of the film hero, for the creators it is a tool and a way to embody the character, and for the viewer – sometimes, unfortunately, a teaching manual. And despite the established rules, not everyone is ready to follow them, which makes you think about how and where we use chewing gum, while observing etiquette.

The first rule of chewing gum is to be mindful of the place and time. If you find yourself in a public place where silence and respect for others are important, resist the urge to start chewing. This is especially true in places like church, the theater, or a business meeting. Even if chewing gum is your best friend at such times, put it aside for later.

An employee's business reputation and career growth are closely linked to the image he creates. In business meetings and negotiations, where every nuance matters, it is important to pay attention to the details of your behavior. Chewing gum during a serious conversation can create the impression of unprofessionalism and inattention.

There is an opinion that chewing gum can help relieve stress and improve concentration. In some cases, especially when performing routine tasks at the computer, chewing gum can be a useful accessory. But not in business etiquette, because there is a clear rule: “If you chew at work, you will be considered unprofessional.” Chewing gum in the workplace is perceived as disrespectful to colleagues and can negatively affect your business reputation.

Psychologists also point out that a person who chews makes a frivolous impression, since a face occupied with the chewing process loses its meaningful expression. Blowing bubbles in the face of the interlocutor, in turn, is perceived as outright rudeness. Chewing gum while communicating with the interlocutor is considered bad manners.

It is important to conduct introspection and pay attention to details of behavior that may seem unimportant but can have a serious impact on your career. Remember that in today's world, professionalism involves not only competence at work, but also the ability to behave in society.
