A guide for vertigo sufferers: why you should watch the Turkish hit “Forbidden Fruit”

Girls, I'll be honest: what a pity I didn't watch this series when I was younger! If I had, I would have long since married a successful businessman and lived, without knowing any troubles, somewhere on the shores of the Bosphorus. And for those who haven't lost hope for an “all-inclusive” marriage, I recommend watching this series.

“Forbidden Fruit” is not just a “soap opera” with 177 episodes. It is a real encyclopedia of life, where the main character dreamed of living in a palace and wearing diamonds, and not just “being loved.” As they say, with a sweetheart, paradise is in the hut, but on the estate it is somehow safer.

Who is the main star here?

Meet Yildiz Yilmaz (Eda Ece). The name translates as “Star”, and believe me, she shines brighter than anyone. She is the modern-day Hürrem Sultan, and the series itself is the “Magnificent Century” of the 21st century. Only instead of a harem, there are social gatherings, and instead of a sultan, there are a number of rich men.

Yildiz started out as a waitress, to whom a rich lady made an “indecent offer”: to seduce her husband for money. And our blonde was not at a loss!

She's funny, direct, loves to joke, but she won't miss a beat. By the series finale, she introduces herself using the names of all her former oligarch husbands, wearing them like war trophies: Yildiz Yilmaz Argun Kuyucu Yildirim. Now I get it — a collection!

Snake's den

Ender Çelebi (Şevval Sam) is the same femme fatale who dragged Yildiz into this game. Ender is style, grace and pure calculation. She rose from poverty through intrigue and holds on to her wealth with her teeth. She is a style icon, a “diamond woman” who can poison your life with one look. Their confrontation with Yildiz is like a battle of the titans, which smoothly flows into a strange friendship.

Shahika (Nesrin Javadzadeh) is a real “witch with an apple”. She appears later, but immediately takes the bull by the horns. A classic psychopath without empathy, who knows several languages and could build a business empire, but for some reason prefers to run after “old wallets”. Shahika is chaos in its purest form, and watching her is a pleasure.

Yildiz Men

1. Halit Argun (Talat Bulut). The man who started it all. “Halit” means “immortal”, and sometimes it seems that this oligarch will outlive us all. The owner of the steamship factories, who constantly cheats on his wives and yells at his daughters. The only light in his window is his little son Erim. Yildiz managed to ring him only because she was in the right place.

2. Chagatay is a handsome man with a model appearance. Rich, of course. A bit of a mama's boy (hello to his mother Feride with her porcelain-colored teeth), but Yildiz coped with that too.

3. Dogan is an improved version of Halit. A tough businessman who seems to really appreciate our heroine.

What about love?

For those who still believe in pure feelings, there is Zeynep (Sevda Erginci), Yildiz's sister. She is correct, honest, proud and… a bit boring compared to her ambitious sister.

Zeynep says “I don't need money,” but for some reason she also marries only rich men. Her chosen one, Alihan (Onur Tuna), is a handsome man with blue eyes and a lot of complexes.

Support group

Our “queens of intrigue” would not have achieved anything without their faithful assistants.

Caner and Emir are two acrobatic brothers who solve all the heroines' problems. Caner is Ender's brother, Emir is Yildiz's friend. Like Chip and Dale, they are always in a hurry to help, often forgetting about their own personal lives.

And, of course, Asuman is Yildiz's mother. A wise, simple, but brilliant woman! She teaches her daughters that beauty should be used, and always stands behind them like a mountain. Yildiz's success is largely due to her mother's upbringing (and her fortune-telling for money).

Why is it worth watching?

“Forbidden Fruit” is 6 seasons and 177 episodes of pure pleasure. It has it all:

  • Luxurious outfits: the heroines change outfits more often than their moods.
  • Humor: Ender's sarcasm and Yildiz's spontaneity will make you laugh out loud.
  • Survival guide: you'll learn how to deal with your mother-in-law, how to get rid of a rival (like spoiled Kumru), and how to properly delegate dirty work.

So, girls, stock up on coffee (or something stronger) and turn it on. Who said that a beautiful life is forbidden? Nothing is forbidden if you know the rules of the game!
