Angelina Jolie Explains Why She Filed for Divorce From Brad Pitt

In September 2016, Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt, effectively ending a 12-year relationship and two years of marriage. At the time, we didn’t know much, except for the statement Jolie’s attorney provided: “This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting, and asks that the family be given its privacy at this time.”

It’s been nearly four years since the celebrity-gossip world shook at the weight of this news, Pitt has an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, and Jolie did some more film directing. And, it seems, four years is enough time for the public to get a little more than a vague, attorney-provided statement. In an interview with Vogue India, Jolie shared some more details about her split with Pitt.

“I separated for the wellbeing of my family. It was the right decision,” Jolie said. “I continue to focus on their healing. Some have taken advantage of my silence, and the children see lies about themselves in the media, but I remind them that they know their own truth and their own minds. In fact, they are six very brave, very strong young people.”

Jolie might not talk about her divorce often, but she has opened up about it in the recent past. In 2019, she told French publication Madame Le Figaro about how she personally felt following her separation. Lainey-Gossip re-translated the interview back into English.

“I do not know about destiny, but I’m certain that I’m in transition, and this is a homecoming, I’m coming back to myself,” she said. “Because I was a little lost.” She clarified: “I think it was at the end of my relationship with Brad and then when we separated,” she said. “It was complicated, I didn’t recognize myself anymore, and I’d become, how do I say this, smaller, insignificant, even if I didn’t show it. I was profoundly, deeply sad, I was hurt. On the other hand, it was interesting to tap into this humility and sense of insignificance. In the end, that’s human. And on top of that, I was dealing with some health issues. All of these things ground you and remind you of how lucky you are to be alive. It’s a lesson I pass onto my children: the idea of renewal, and through it all, the possibility of joy. I had to rediscover the joy.”

After a long, complicated process of their divorce, Pitt and Jolie have reportedly reached a solid co-parenting relationship.

“Brad and Angelina have come a long way,” a source told Entertainment Tonight last year. “To the surprise of many of their closest friends, their communication has improved tremendously and they’re both dedicated to co-parenting. Their kids have a custody schedule and that’s made a huge difference for the whole family. The schedule has alleviated any of the planning pressures Brad and Angelina have faced in the past. Now the kids spend time with both their parents and are happy and thriving.”

The couple shares six children, Maddox, 18, Pax, 16, Zahara, 15, Shiloh, 14, and twins Vivienne and Knox, 11.
