No, Rudy did not exit Outer Banks. In a conversation with Netflix regarding his character’s fate, Rudy cited JJ’s self-sacrificing nature as a factor that helped the actor accept his demise.
“When I initially learned that JJ was going to risk everything and not survive, I understood it,” Rudy shared with Netflix following the release of season 4 part 2 in November 2024. “The dangers escalated progressively, and the stakes grew increasingly higher.”
According to Netflix, the demise of JJ was a pre-meditated decision by the series’ creators, Josh Pate, Jonas Pate, and Shannon Burke. Josh informed the publication that despite the “exceptionally difficult decision” to eliminate JJ, his death “lays the groundwork for a monumental fifth and final season.”
“We are envisioning a narrative of atonement, and a season that encapsulates the camaraderie that JJ had come to embody,” Josh further elaborated. “JJ’s passing was a challenging yet indispensable component of the story’s framework, and we intend to honor it to the fullest extent possible, as we hold the character in the same high regard as the fans do. Furthermore, Rudy is a valued friend.”

Josh, Jonas, and Shannon penned a heartfelt message to the fans of OBX, revealing their long-held expectation that the show would span five seasons.
“Seven years ago, during the summer of 2017, we encountered an image of adolescents on a beach at twilight during a blackout,” the series creators stated. “That photograph inspired the concept for a story centered on four close friends whose sole desire was to revel in life continuously. From this genesis, we envisioned a mystery that would propel a five-season saga of escapades, treasure hunting, and companionship.”
Concluding their correspondence — which was addressed to the Pogues — Josh, Jonas, and Shannon wrote, “Now, with a measure of regret coupled with anticipation, we are moving past season 4 and focusing our attention on season five, wherein we aim to bring our cherished Pogues back to their rightful place in the manner we envisioned and planned five years prior.”
‘Outer Banks’ Season 5 Cast List
Netflix has confirmed the return of Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Carlacia Grant, Drew Starkey, and Austin North for the fifth and concluding season of Outer Banks.
Pankow, who portrayed JJ Maybank, has not been officially listed as part of the Season 5 cast following his character’s fate in Season 4. While some viewers have speculated about potential appearances in flashback sequences, Netflix has yet to confirm any involvement.
In his remarks to Netflix, Rudy formally expressed his gratitude to the OBX cast and crew, which may suggest his non-participation in season 5.
