So, what prompted Bowen’s exit from SNL at this juncture? Here’s what we understand regarding his midseason departure.

When Did Bowen Yang Depart Saturday Night Live?
Bowen’s final appearance on SNL was on December 20, 2025. He left prior to the holiday recess.
Why Did Bowen Yang Leave SNL?
Bowen shared a touching message about his departure via an Instagram post on December 20. Emphasizing his profound affection for his time at SNL, Bowen stated that he “adored the people” he collaborated with.
“I was there during a period when many global events seemed increasingly disheartening, yet working at 30 Rock taught me the significance of persevering when the company makes it worthwhile,” he conveyed. “I am deeply appreciative of every moment of my time there. I gained insights about myself (not good with wigs). I learned about others (compassionate, open, attractive). I discovered that human error can indeed lead to correct outcomes. I came to understand that comedy is largely a matter of organization and that it typically falters until it succeeds, which is the most rewarding part.”

During a discussion on his podcast, “Las Culturistas,” on January 7, 2026, Bowen elaborated on the motivation behind his departure: timing.
“This is genuinely the core reason: It’s time. After seven seasons, it’s customary to move on,” he remarked. “The pandemic and the prevailing media landscape, the current entertainment ecosystem, are so volatile that individuals have completely justifiable reasons for extending their stays, or, in many instances, lack the advantage of remaining as long as they desire. I am fortunate to have the ability to state that I stayed for precisely the duration I intended.”
Although some viewers expressed surprise at his decision, Bowen’s exit has been a subject of conversation. In an interview with People in September 2025, amidst a widely discussed cast transformation, the *Wicked* actor indicated that he felt he still “had more to accomplish” on SNL and wished to remain.
“My instinct has always been to consider whether I have more to contribute. And I feel that I do,” Bowen informed the publication. “**Lorne** [**Michaels**], the creator, mentioned, ‘You still have more to do,’ and that carries significant weight, as I even admitted to him… ‘I feel the audience might be growing weary of me.’ And he responded, ‘That’s untrue. There’s more for you to do. I need you.’”
Bowen added that he felt compelled “to honor that,” referencing Lorne’s statement. He also credited the SNL creator with providing the initial impetus for his career in entertainment.
“That man has transformed my life, and I owe a substantial portion of my life to that show,” Bowen continued. “And I genuinely enjoy working there; the people are unparalleled. I truly cherish each one of them immensely.”
Bowen Yang says he left “SNL” because he “never felt central” to the show.
“I never played the dad or the straight-man teacher. I was always kind of there as the seasoning.”

However, Bowen’s perspective on his SNL departure shifted during his June 2026 interview for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series with **Rachel Sennott**.
“I feel as though I was rather determined the season prior to depart,” he observed. “To be candid, I never felt I was particularly central to it, because I feel… I feel there was a peculiar utility to me where I thought, ‘Okay.’ And I’ve come to terms with this. It’s as if I never portrayed the father figure or the conventional teacher role. I was consistently present more as a flavor enhancer, and I thought, ‘That’s fantastic. I’m incredibly fortunate. I can’t believe I have this position. I can’t believe I have stable employment in comedy.’ Wow. Remarkable. I will treasure it for the remainder of my life, and I simply felt it was the opportune moment.”
Who Else Departed SNL?
A considerable number of SNL performers, favorites among viewers, exited the show before its 51st season. Notable among them were **Devon Walker,** **Emil Wakim,** **Michael Longfellow,** **Heidi Gardner**, and **Ego Nwodim**.
When Ego’s departure garnered widespread attention, she addressed her exit in a heartfelt Instagram message in September 2025. She wrote, “The most challenging aspect of a wonderful gathering is knowing when to say ‘goodnight.’ However, after seven incredible seasons, I have made the decision to leave SNL.”
Stating that she was “profoundly appreciative to Lorne for the opportunity,” Ego extended her gratitude to her fellow cast members, the writers, and the SNL crew for their “brilliance, support, and camaraderie.”
“Week after week on that stage imparted more knowledge than I could have ever envisioned, and I will carry those recollections, along with that laughter, with me always,” she concluded.
