But brands need to sell more. Now they're packing this vitamin A in big lotion bottles and convincing us to apply it to our bodies. Of course, they promise eternal youth, elasticity, and almost-cubes on our stomachs without a single bar.
It's a bit funny to hear. I suggest looking at this trend with the healthy cynicism of an adult: for whom will these half-liter cans really make life easier, and for whom will they become the most expensive junk on the bathroom shelf.
When retinol for the body is a really cool idea
Are you tired of goosebumps?
You know this skin condition, when small, sometimes reddish blisters appear on the back of the arms, thighs, or buttocks. Dermatologists call it follicular keratosis. The skin there simply becomes too lazy to exfoliate normally, the pores become clogged, and a kind of relief is obtained, far from the glossy look of a magazine. If you read the composition of modern lotions, you can see that retinol is often mixed with acids or urea. It sounds quite logical: such a chemical cocktail should dissolve keratinized blockages. Those who are deeply immersed in the topic of care claim that the effect is quite similar to the result after an expensive spa.
The décolleté and hands “give away” age
Women can spend half their salary on facial serums, then ignore their neck, décolleté, and hands for years, going out in the sun without protection. The payoff comes in the form of age spots, dryness, and fine lines. Since I constantly watch retinol accelerate cell renewal on the faces of colleagues and acquaintances, transferring this logic to the neck seems to me to be about the only completely adequate reason to invest in such a tool. It can really lighten spots a little and refresh the texture.
When it WILL NOT help you (no matter what it says on the label)
Let's be honest with ourselves and our wallets. No cream, even if it costs like an air grill, can tighten sagging skin after drastic weight loss or pregnancy. Retinol is a purely superficial story. It works well with the quality of the skin itself, its color and texture, but it has nothing to do with muscles or deep tissues. When an advertisement promises me a tummy lift from a lotion, I want to advise the authors of this text to go for a normal manual massage or stop going to the gym.
How to use it without causing harm
If you are still tempted to experiment, you will have to play by the rules, otherwise instead of an even tone, you may get complete irritation.
Applying this lotion from head to toe makes no sense, and it would be too expensive. It is much more logical to work with problem areas in a targeted manner. For example, apply only to the shoulders where there is a rash, or only to the décolleté.
You'll have to be patient. Even if the skin on your body seems thick and impenetrable to you, it can turn red and start to peel. From the side, it looks so-so, so it's better to start carefully: twice a week before going to bed is enough for the head to start.
Don't forget that retinol is quite drying. On those days when you leave it on the shelf, you should generously lubricate your body with a regular base cream. The more ceramides or some nourishing oils are in the composition, the sooner your skin will thank you.
And sunscreen, where can you go without it? If you treat exposed areas with active ingredients, going outside in the morning without SPF is a sentence. Instead of renewing, the sun will paint you with new age spots.
Who should avoid retinol products?
Obviously, pregnant and breastfeeding mothers do not need these jars at all. This is a basic safety rule for any cosmetics with vitamin A. The same applies to periods when you have an exacerbation of eczema, psoriasis or your skin is so sensitive that it reacts even to water. First, you need to restore the protective barrier with boring but effective pharmacy balms, and only then even think about any active ingredients.
In short, a retinol body lotion isn't a must-have. If you're really bothered by blisters on your thighs, uneven skin tone, or pigmentation on your breasts, and you're willing to put in the effort to moisturize and protect yourself regularly, this is a good investment in your self-confidence. Just don't expect a bottle of retinol to do what only a plastic surgeon can do.
