Sometimes you see a woman – everything seems to be calibrated to the millimeter, trendy cut, complex styling, but there is so much tension in her pose, as if she is not wearing a coat, but a concrete slab. And next to her, someone in a stretched sweater is drinking coffee from a paper cup, and she exudes such a piercing lightness that you can't help but wonder, informs Ukr.Media.
Glossy magazines have been feeding us rules about what and how to wear after a certain age for years. But if we ignore all this informational noise, visual fatigue is usually hidden in completely everyday, almost imperceptible details.
Clothing should “hug”, not suffocate
The cruelest thing we do to our bodies is trying to squeeze into things from our past lives. Jeans that make you hold your breath while trying to button them, or a blouse that restricts your arm movement. This has nothing to do with aesthetics, just chronic physical discomfort.
It is impossible to relax in tight clothes. The shoulders involuntarily crawl up, the back hunches, and this characteristic anxious look of a person who is constantly tugging and pulling something in appears. When there is at least a little space between the body and the fabric – physical air – an elusive freedom of movement appears. It is not necessary to hide in sizeless hoodies, but the right to one's own real size is, perhaps, the basic respect for one's body today.
Black color: to wear or not?
For years, stylists have been scaring us with the idea that black on our faces is an absolute evil that will highlight every wrinkle and dark shadow under our eyes. It sounds logical, but the reality is that black is our uniform. It’s understandable, it’s life-saving, it’s appropriate for the level of melancholy we’re all in right now.
It's ridiculous to refuse it because of some shadows on the skin. The trick is to not let the black color dully approach the chin, like a spacesuit. A slightly open neck, a V-neck, or just a glint from some pendant – and this dramatic effect of “widow's grief” dissipates.
Makeup: the rule of “less is more”
There's an irony in the fact that the methods we used to try to hide fatigue a decade ago now have the exact opposite effect. The thick foundation that once seemed like a reliable shield from the world's imperfections now has a treacherous habit of emphasizing every facial line. The face becomes like a mask that is about to crack at the slightest emotion.
It takes a certain amount of courage to abandon a dull matte tone in favor of something translucent—you have to admit that skin is alive and has texture. The same goes for black, graphic eyeliner. Once it made your eyes look fatal, now it just weighs down your eyelids. Replacing a black pencil with a shaded gray or brown one makes your face less severe.
Eyebrows and hair are our “frame”
Nothing gives away inner tension like a “concreted” hairstyle that is not afraid of either wind or gravity. Hair that has lost its ability to move automatically makes the image static. The same applies to eyebrows. This is generally a strange phenomenon of our time — perfectly drawn, symmetrical, too dark eyebrows that exist as if separately from their owner. Over time, the natural lines of the face sag a little, and if you continue to draw heavy graphics, the facial expression becomes permanently gloomy, as if you constantly suspect someone of treason.
The right not to smile 24/7
Perhaps the most audacious demand for modern women is the recommendation to “smile more, because gloom makes you old.” In the context of our reality, this sounds like a cruel joke. Squeezing out fake joy when everything is twisted into a knot inside is a colossal waste of energy.
The secret is not in the smile at all. The secret is in the absence of spasm. A clenched jaw, clenched teeth – this is what really changes the facial features. Sometimes it is enough to just exhale and lower your shoulders. The face of a woman who allows herself not to play at constant positivity and has the right to her fatigue always looks much more natural than a grimace of forced friendliness.
And honestly, if on a particular Thursday you feel like wearing a tight dress, drawing aggressive black arrows, spraying your hair with hairspray, and going out for coffee in that look — for God's sake. Any rules lose their meaning if some little thing helps you just stay on your feet today.
