“Pillion”

Right now, in Ukrainian cinemas, you can watch one of the most provocative films of the spring – the BDSM romcom “Pillion”. At the center of the story is a shy loner Colin (Harry Melling), whose life changes after a chance meeting with Ray (Alexander Skarsgard), a charismatic leader of a motorcycle club and a supporter of strict BDSM aesthetics. Becoming Ray's “pillion”, Colin finds himself in a world where tenderness borders on rigidity, and submission becomes a form of trust. This is a journey deep into queer and kink subculture in search of an answer to the question – is it possible to belong completely to another without losing yourself?

The film also immerses viewers in the aesthetics of the Gay Bikers Motorcycle Club (GBMCC), the oldest and largest LGBT+ motorcycle club in Europe. Clothing in the film becomes a vehicle for “fantasy and fetishism,” and costume designer Grace Snell designed a full leather wardrobe for the characters, inspired by the biker aesthetic and style of the Gay Bikers Motorcycle Club members.

Marc by Sofia

The documentary “Mark from Sofia” is a unique dialogue between two artists who have been in a strange creative symbiosis for over thirty years, in a common “we” of a generation that grew up on grunge, MTV and fashion as a universal language of culture. Sofia Coppola's film traces their relationship from the time they met in the 1990s, their friendship and co-creation, and its greatest value is not only in how Sofia reveals the personality of her friend, but also in how the film shows the interaction between fashion and cinema. The documentary is structured as a confession in a mirror. Jacobs confesses: “I always dreamed of being a theater director,” and Coppola echoes him: “And I always wanted to design clothes.” Their mutual desires seem to mirror each other, creating a space where the boundary between fashion and cinema disappears.

“Mother Mary”

A24's Mother Mary immerses us in the psychosexual whirlwind of a relationship between pop star Mary (Anne Hathaway) and iconic designer Sam (Mikaela Coel). Their fateful encounter comes about when Mary needs a dress for her triumphant comeback tour, forcing the former friends to reunite in the intimate and tense space of a studio.

For Hathaway, this role was a real acting challenge and, according to her, an exercise in giving up control: the actress abandoned her usual “polished” style of acting, improvising in vocal scenes and completely dissolving in the chaos of her character. The atmosphere of the film, which Lowry himself compares in intensity to “Apocalypse Now”, is complemented by a stellar supporting cast, including Hunter Shafer as a silent assistant, as well as a soundtrack from contemporary music stars – Charli XCX, Jack Antonoff and FKA Twigs. The fashion in the film is fantasy, sophisticated and somewhat theatrical.

“The Devil Wears Prada 2”

This spring, we are waiting for the long-awaited sequel to the cult film of 2006, which made the whole world fall in love with the lifestyle of glossy media workers. The plot of the film “The Devil Wears Prada 2” tells about the return of Andy, the heroine of Anne Hathaway, who works as an assistant to Miranda Priestly, the tough and uncompromising editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, to the editorial office during a period of profound changes in the media industry. Miranda Priestly is trying to save the magazine in a new digital environment, where the very existence of glossy media is under threat. An important part of the story is the return of another former assistant – Emily, played by Emily Blunt. Now she heads the luxury brand and controls the advertising budgets, on which the future of Runway directly depends.

Most of the cast and crew from the original film returned, including Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci, who reprised his role as Nigel Kipling. “Everyone who was physically able to return for the second film did so. We immediately felt a shared understanding of what this film has meant to us and to audiences over the past 20 years,” says Anne Hathaway.
