Aubrey Plaza and her loved ones experienced a profound bereavement the previous year after the passing of her former spouse, Jeff Baena, who was 47 years old. The pair privately went their separate ways in 2024 yet remained legally bound as husband and wife at the time of his death in January 2025.

Jeff enjoyed success as a screenwriter, producer, and director. He is recognized for his work on The Little Hours (2017), Life After Beth (2014) and Cinema Toast (2021). He reunited with Alison Brie to co-author 2022’s Spin Me Round, in which she also performed.

One of Jeff’s significant achievements in the movie industry occurred when he co-wrote the script for I Heart the Huckabees alongside David O. Russell. The 2004 picture, which garnered critical praise, was a comedy centered on existential private eyes.
Aubrey and Jeff Had a Secret Wedding
The world was unaware that Aubrey was even planning a marriage when she went to her Instagram on May 7, 2021, to subtly reveal that she had gotten married. Accompanying a photo of the pair, she expressed, “So proud of my darling husband @jeffbaena for dreaming up another film that takes us to italia to cause some more trouble 😈 excited to be reunited with the amazing @alisonbrie (who also co-wrote this one!) and @theofficialsuperstar @sordociego @lauren_weedman and so many more fun people in this.”
In March 2025, an official report revealed that the pair had separated during September 2024. A month later, it came to light that Jeff had uttered “troubling comments,” leading Aubrey to “request a friend to check in on her husband.”
Jeff Passed Away in January 2025
On January 4, 2025, various news sources stated that Jeff had died. Authorities announced that his death was the result of suicide.
In the days following his death, Aubrey and the Baena family released a statement to People in an article released on January 6, 2025, “This is an unbelievable tragedy. We are incredibly thankful to everyone who has given their support. Please allow us privacy at this time.”
As previously mentioned, Aubrey and Jeff were estranged when he passed.
