Savannah Guthrie has taken a leave from the Today program as the investigation persists concerning her mom, Nancy Guthrie. The 84-year-old was last spotted on January 31, 2026, and she was taken during the night by a mysterious person from her residence in Tucson, Arizona. While law enforcement continues to probe and implore the community to offer any details, Guthrie has remained off-screen to be alongside her family.
As the matter develops, questions regarding her presence on Today have grown. While NBC hasn’t given any formal statement, accounts have come out implying that Savannah might not go back. Although, she isn’t running away from her occupation. The newscaster conversed with Hoda Kotb in a dialogue to address her mom’s kidnapping. Soon after that, Savannah made known her return date to the broadcast.

How Long Has Nancy Guthrie Been Missing?
As of this writing, Nancy has been gone for 54 days. Representatives haven’t discovered potential suspects, but they briefly held a couple of individuals. None of them are still under police supervision.
Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos told The New York Times that authorities aren’t abandoning the search for Nancy.
“Maybe it’s just a short time from now. Possibly it could be weeks, months, or even years from now. However, we won’t give up,” he revealed to the outlet. “We’re going to locate Nancy. We are going to catch this person responsible.”

What Happened to Nancy Guthrie?
As stated by the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, Nancy was forced out of her home against her will. Traces of blood were discovered at the location, and security camera recordings from that evening displayed a concealed figure obscuring security devices at the Tucson home.

Is Savannah Guthrie Leaving the Today Show?
No, Savannah never stated a complete departure from Today, however several reports suggested her coming back would be doubtful. As the search for her mom proceeds, sources pointed out that the longtime co-anchor would be departing permanently.
According to Status News, one television executive frankly mentioned, “There is just no chance Savannah is ever returning. I doubt that she would even have any desire to.” While NBC hasn’t put out any official announcement concerning her future, associates at Today have proceeded in sharing their support, with the network said to be granting her the time and space that she needs during the current situation. A source informed Page Six, “The entire show and company is getting together to help our prized colleague and friend as we deal with this incredibly difficult period.”

One expert also told the outlet that the employees at Today “all pray daily” for Nancy’s matter to come to a close, including, “Each and everyone at Today is facing this situation slowly, and of course giving Savannah the tolerance, time, and backing that is needed.”
Regardless, Savannah came back to the program in March to sit with her friend Hoda for a sit-down discussion.
When Is Savannah Guthrie Coming Back to the Today Show?
Savannah verified that she will return to Today on April 6, 2026.
“It’s a challenge to assume to do because it’s a location of joy and brightness, and I cannot come back and attempt to be anything that I lack the capacity to be,” Savannah clarified. “Even so, I cannot not come back, because this is where my people are. I believe that it is part of my task at this time.”
