Square nails are back: the most fashionable manicure of spring 2026 and how to wear it stylishly

The 2000s gave us a treasure trove of trends, from frizzy hair to icy blue eyeshadow. And now, in 2026, another iconic beauty trend is making a comeback: square nails. “Square nails are all the rage right now. The 2000s aesthetic is making a comeback, with brands like Miu Miu reviving nostalgic fashion, so nail trends are no exception,” says celebrity manicurist Michelle Humphrey.

Square nails can look both dramatic and bold, or minimalist. It all depends on your preferences. “We're used to more sophisticated shapes, while a square adds a clear structure and boldness to the look, which requires a certain confidence,” explains nail artist Julia Diogo. The main thing is to correctly form an even square edge. “This shape suits nails of any length, but medium and longer are currently in trend,” adds Humphrey.

The trend pairs perfectly with bright colors, patterns, and cute details. “A square French tip looks super stylish with a bright white tip, and it's also great for a modern 'American' manicure (with a softer, more natural shade of white),” says Humphrey. Popular options include polka dots, semi-sheer shimmers, and silver glitter lines. “It's all about the nostalgia of the '00s.”

What are square nails?

Square nails have a smooth, flat top (or “free edge”). It is the sharp angles and straight lines that create their recognizable geometry.

Why are square nails trending in 2026?

It's either a return to the zeros or a reaction to the overly “clean” aesthetics of recent years. Square nails are more graphic and expressive, unlike the soft almond-shaped or oval shapes that dominated the late 2010s and early 2020s. “Y2K trends are actively bringing this shape back, and it will become even more popular in the summer,” notes Diogo.

How to care for a square shape?

Square nails look best on a strong nail plate, as sharp corners can break. Humphrey recommends using acrylic or hard gel for longer nails. Another popular option is the Gel X system, which offers gel nails in a variety of square shapes and lengths.

How is a square different from a squoval?

“It's all about the angles. The square shape has sharp edges, while the squoval is a softer, rounded version,” explains Diogo. The square creates a more structured look to the nail bed, while the squoval is more delicate.

How to make perfect square nails at home?

“This shape is ideal for narrow nail plates. First, you should give the nails a medium length,” says Diogo. It is also important to push back the cuticle to visually lengthen the nail. The final step is to file the edge in a straight line in one direction using a fine-grained file.

How to avoid chips and snags?

Although square nails are shorter than almond-shaped or oval-shaped nails, their corners create stress points. “After shaping, it's a good idea to lightly file the corners to remove any excess sharpness,” advises Diogo.
