On the night of March 16, the winners of the Oscars were announced in Los Angeles. The main favorite was the film “One Battle After Another” by Paul Thomas Anderson, which took the categories “Best Picture”, “Best Director”, “Best Adapted Screenplay”, etc. We are talking about the Oscar winners, which can already be seen in Ukraine in cinemas and on streaming services.
“One battle against another”
The new film by Paul Thomas Anderson, one of the leading directors of our time, who gave us a number of talented films, such as “Phantom Thread”, “The Master” or “Oil”, was the expected winner of the evening. “One Battle After Another” took home statuettes in key categories: “Best Picture”, “Best Director”, “Best Adapted Screenplay”, as well as “Best Supporting Actor” for Sean Penn (who did not come to the ceremony because he went to Ukraine).
Anderson is a movie legend, and his new work is worth watching regardless of the Oscars. Recall that “One Battle After Another” tells the story of Bob Ferguson (Leonardo DiCaprio), a former hippie, drug addict and alcoholic, who falls in love with the reclusive Profidia (Teyana Taylor). The girl reciprocates and leaves Colonel Lockjaw (Sean Penn) to be with Bob.

However, Lockjaw, a white supremacist (a racist ideology) who does not forgive such acts, takes revenge on the couple 16 years later by kidnapping their common daughter. “One Battle After Another” surprises, shocks, makes you talk about yourself and rethink everything you've seen before.

” Hamnet ”
Right now, in cinemas you can see one of the strongest films of the year – the drama “Hamnet” by the Oscar winner of the past years Chloe Zhao, which tells about the personal life of William Shakespeare. Before the ceremony, most critics and journalists were betting that it was the 36-year-old Irish star Jessie Buckley, who played Shakespeare's wife Agnes, who would win the “Oscar”. And so it happened, and absolutely deservedly, because Buckley demonstrates an uncompromising, nerve-racking performance. Paul Mescal, who played Shakespeare, is also wonderful in “Hamnet” – the actor thanks to whom Hollywood started talking about the concept of a new sincerity among men.

“Frankenstein”
If you want gothic luxury and surreal beauty, you should watch Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein, which won one of the most beautiful categories – “Best Costume Design”. They are truly stunning in the film. Costume designer Kate Hawley achieved the seemingly impossible: she dresses the reckless scientist Victor Frankenstein, played by Oscar Isaac, in luxurious velvet coats and jewelry that take your breath away. Mia Goth, as Elizabeth – the object of his passion – wears silk ball gowns with a pattern-scheme of the solar system; luxurious bright veils; feather hair ornaments resembling a halo; fans framed by tulle; rare archival jewelry from Tiffany & Co.

“Sentimental value”
Norwegian director Joachim Trier's quiet intellectual drama “Sentimental Value” won in the Best International Film category. It's a historic win for Norway, which became the first country to lead the category.
The film focuses on the heroine Renate Reinsve, a theater actress and a young woman in an existential crisis. Her psychological problems are apparently shaped by the influence of her egocentric father. He is a narcissistic director who, after a long break, decides to shoot a film in the family home. Throughout the film, they will try to establish a relationship, during which the film itself will be formed inside. “Sentimental Value” combines the best features of the director – it is a very dramatic picture, in which there is a lot of intimate pain and tears of a person who cannot be understood or heard.

“Weapon”

Cragger's film has grossed over $268 million worldwide on a budget of $38 million, and her Gladys has instantly become an icon of horror films – critics have called her the “secret weapon” of the film. Her quirky and at the same time sinister Aunt Gladys has instantly fallen in love with the audience – the character has already spawned countless memes and Halloween costumes.
