For centuries, marriage remained a completely pragmatic survival tool — a kind of legal way to get status and a roof over your head. Now, when you have a diploma, a career, and your own account, getting married just to avoid being lost alone has become somehow irrelevant. The outdated scenario, where ambitions ended with choosing wallpaper for the nursery, has simply cracked, Ukr.Media reports.
Instead of rejoicing in the very fact of having a partner in the house, more complex matters have crept to the fore: emotional intelligence and symmetry in everyday life. It sounds prosaic, but this is where the main nerve lies. No one wants to work as a free “life manager” for an adult man anymore. Serving someone else’s psycho-emotional state is a full-fledged second shift, for which they don’t even write out a bonus.
Masha aptly notes two triggers that closed this era. The first is social media. They quickly demonstrated that having breakfast alone somewhere in Lisbon is normal, and not having a boyfriend does not make you inferior. The second trigger, much more painful, is war. Ukrainian women were simply forced to become both their own rear and their own front. To make tough decisions, to pick up their scattered lives anew, and to deal with the consequences without any mythical “strong shoulder.”
And it's not that the institution of relationships has been abolished. We simply have fallen out of love with bad relationships. Those where the partnership breaks down over a chronically unwashed cup, and love mutates into a habit of carrying everything on oneself. A modern woman is no longer looking for the classic “support” that was so loved to be written about in the novels of the last century. She rather needs a man with whom life will become at least a little more interesting than without him. Because everything else, it seems, she already does quite well on her own.
