What Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy wanted to do to her hair the day before her wedding

It's generally believed that you shouldn't drastically change your beauty routine in the months leading up to your wedding. Cutting your hair, experimenting with new skincare products, or drastically changing your hair color are taboo. But as it turns out, Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy almost broke that rule just the day before her highly publicized wedding to John F. Kennedy Jr.

A beauty solution that could have changed history

Last summer, colorist Brad Jones shared the story after the first footage of Ryan Murphy's Love Story series, which follows Bessette and Kennedy's relationship, was released. Jones was one of the hottest colorists in the 1990s. When he opened his eponymous salon on Fifth Avenue, it had just eight chairs, but its clientele included the fashion elite (including Kate Moss and Christy Turlington) and royals.

It was Jones who created Bessette-Kennedy's signature hair color, a natural blonde that he described as “the color of a child's hair after a day at the beach.” He created it using his own chunking dyeing technique. According to the stylist, they “worked really hard” on the result.

However, this shade almost disappeared just before Carolyn Bessette and Kennedy's wedding. “The day before the ceremony, Carolyn came to my salon. I didn't know anything about the wedding. I loved her very much, she was my friend, but I didn't know him. She sat down in the chair and said, 'We have to change my hair color,'” Jones recalled. The stylist was shocked and even more surprised when she added, “I want to go brunette. Black.” His reaction was short and decisive: “I told her, 'I'm not going to do it.'”

Bessette-Kennedy explained that she was nervous, adding, “There's something really important going on and I want to look different.” Despite this, Jones refused to change her color. When photos from her wedding day later emerged, the stylist was relieved to see that he hadn't given in. “I called Carolyn and said, 'What do you think you'd look like in that Narciso dress with the black bun?' She said she was happy with my decision and that she trusted me.”
