E! News had reported that Sarah was in negotiations to bring back the beloved television program. Searchlight TV and 20th Television had previously referred to the potential revival as “the next chapter in the Buffyverse.”

The writing for the show was to be helmed by the Poker Face writers, Nora and Lilla Zuckerman. Furthermore, Dolly Parton was, at one point, slated to serve as a producer for the show. Interesting tidbit: She also held a producer title on the original series! While Sarah remained tight-lipped about the undertaking, she mentioned, “If Dolly Parton wants to get in touch, I’m always open to receiving a call from the icon,” according to Us Weekly.

It begs the question of whether Dolly had a hand behind the curtain! Shortly after the announcement, Sarah posted a photo on her Instagram account of her in her sushi pajamas, which dedicated fans will remember from the show’s fourth season. She used a sushi emoji as the caption, and devoted followers immediately understood the yummy hidden clue.

Why Was the ‘Buffy’ Reboot Axed?
According to a March 2026 video Sarah posted on Instagram, the initial lead actress mentioned that Hulu decided against continuing with the reboot. The reasons behind the streaming service’s change of heart remain unknown.
“I feel truly disheartened to share this news, but I wanted to ensure you heard it directly from me. Regrettably, Hulu has chosen to discontinue the Buffy: New Sunnydale project,” the actress stated. “I extend my appreciation to Chloé Zhao, as I never imagined I would revisit Buffy’s stylish yet budget-friendly footwear. And because of Chloé, I was reminded of my deep affection for her, along with the profound significance she holds not only for myself but for all of you. … None of this alters that, and I promise if the end of the world arrives, you can still reach out to me.”
