Since the beginning of the 2000s, American Idol has been a mainstay in the landscape of American reality television. Vocalists with dreams of stardom audition for an opportunity to be the next big thing in music, and while the aim is often a recording contract, the grand prize is the monetary award given to the victors. However, what about the contestants that advance to the later stages of the competition?
It would stand to reason that some, if not all, of the competitors are reimbursed for devoting their time to the reality program. After all, certain hopeful musicians even resign from employment in their hometowns to pursue their aspirations. So, what is the compensation for American Idol participants, and what do the champions currently get?
Hollywood Life details the American Idol payment structure below, in contrast to what it used to be in prior seasons.
Do American Idol Contestants Get Paid for Being on the Show?
Participants aren’t automatically paid when they go to Hollywood; however, they do receive compensation if they progress to the show’s live performances, as stated by former contestant Margie Mays in a TikTok video from 2020.
“You’re not compensated until the live shows,” Margie clarified. “I was also in a few commercials for [American Idol], and those pay. When they transport you to locations like Hawaii, it’s evident they’re covering that, including things like a daily allowance for meals while in Hawaii. But they aren’t compensating you merely for being a contestant.”
In another TikTok, Margie affirmed that the program foots the bill for lodging, food, and travel during Hollywood Week.
“They’re not giving you cash, but they do cover your expenses,” she highlighted.
Those who advance into the Top 24 can be paid a respectable amount per episode, but they must first cover the $3,000 enrollment fee to join the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (AFTRA), according to TV Insider and Taste of Country. After a contestant joins, they can make $1,571 for a two-hour broadcast, $1,303 for each one-hour episode, and $910 for each half-hour broadcast, based on 2016 data.
How Much Money Do American Idol Winners Get?
Currently, American Idol winners anticipate getting $250,000, though season 16’s winner Maddie Poppe revealed how much of that money she actually retained.
“You do receive $250,000, but not exactly because of tax obligations,” Maddie informed Business Insider in 2022. “You’re given half prior to finishing your record, and then the remaining half after the record is done. So, it operates like an advance on the recording contract, but I’m fairly certain I need to make that back.”
In the show’s initial years, Idol claimed that winners could get up to $1 million, but Kelly Clarkson revealed the reality of the situation on a 2026 episode of her namesake talk show.
“They said, ‘Oh, you get a million dollars or something, bla bla bla,”‘ the singer of “Since U Been Gone” started. “No, you don’t. They were lying. You didn’t, absolutely not. It was more like a million dollars of investment in you. … And then they mentioned you get a car. Which I required, since my vehicle was banged up and I couldn’t handle the excess.”
