5 habits that imperceptibly age your skin

Sometimes I look at familiar faces and think about how paradoxically we are created. Aging is an absolutely natural process, but for some reason we love to help it, and with some methodical persistence. And if gravity cannot be canceled, then our own daily habits are a very tangible thing that step by step rebuilds the architecture of the face, informs Ukr.Media.

Smoking

Take, for example, smoking. The aesthetics of a cigarette with morning coffee have long been left in the cinema of the last century, but physiology has not disappeared anywhere. Tobacco smoke harms the skin from several sides at once: blood vessels narrow, tissues do not receive enough oxygen and nutrition, and the amount of collagen and elastin in the dermis rapidly decreases. I often notice this specific picture, which in dermatology is boringly called the “smoker’s face”: a yellowish-gray, earthy undertone, vertical wrinkles around the lips, puffiness and a fuzzy contour. The skin of smokers shows a deficiency of collagen fibers of types I and III – the dermis becomes stiff. The dependence here is absolutely direct: the more experience, the deeper the wrinkles. It is clear that giving up the habit will not turn back time and will not return the teenage swelling of the cheeks, but it will at least slow down stress and stop tissue degradation.

Ignoring SPF

Or our strange love for a “healthy tan.” Photoaging has little in common with age-related changes—it’s more aggressive and manifests itself unevenly: on the face, neck, décolleté, and hands. Ultraviolet light activates metalloproteinases, enzymes that literally break down collagen while new protein synthesis is suspended. The skin becomes tight, dry, and covered with pigmentation and a network of fine wrinkles. The worst part is that this damage accumulates over decades, even if you never get a blistering sunburn. Regular use of a broad-spectrum SPF works not as a shield against a mythical danger, but as a tool that reduces the expression of genes involved in the skin’s stress response. A year of using a photostable cream with SPF30 objectively improves texture and eliminates some of the damage that has already accumulated.

Love for sweets

Glucose and fructose at a consistently high level react with amino acids. The glycation process is triggered. Sugars simply glue collagen and elastin fibers together, forming AGEs — glycation end products. The matrix loses elasticity and becomes brittle. Fibroblasts in such a sweet environment begin to become lazy, change shape, and instead of normal work, produce pro-inflammatory molecules. This is quite easy to notice on the face: early ptosis, uneven relief, yellowing, and chronic dryness due to impaired ceramide synthesis.

Enhanced cleaning

By the way, about dryness. The passion for cleansing “until it squeaks” is another way to mock the hydrolipid mantle. Hot water, aggressive surfactants, alkaline soap. One such wash is enough to break the protective barrier. Transepidermal moisture loss soars, the pH shifts to the alkaline side. The skin reacts with tightness, redness and micro-inflammation. And chronic inflammation, even mild, is always accelerated collagen destruction.

Sleep

Hours of compression and tissue displacement when the face is pressed into a pillow on the side or stomach form “sleep wrinkles”. While the skin is elastic, it straightens in the morning, but over time these deformations turn into persistent creases on the cheeks and chin. In addition, sleep deprivation affects the production of melatonin. In the dark, it works as a powerful antioxidant for the skin, protecting it from the effects of UV radiation and regulating inflammatory processes. Lack of sleep disrupts the circadian rhythms of the skin, reduces its barrier function and even changes the diversity of the microbiome on the face. A dark, cool room, sleeping on your back and the famous 7-8 hours of rest are not some unattainable luxury, but simply an adequate base so that your face does not look like a crumpled draft in the morning.
