Will Iran Participate in the 2026 World Cup?
Iran’s sports minister, Ahmad Donyamali, announced that the country would not participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, citing the continuing conflict with the U.S.
“Considering that this corrupt regime [the U.S.] has assassinated our leader, we cannot participate in the World Cup under any circumstances,” Donyamali stated to state television, according to USA Today. “Our citizens are not secure, and fundamentally, the conditions for participation are nonexistent. … Considering the malicious actions carried out against Iran, they have forced two wars on us in eight to nine months and killed thousands of our citizens. Thus, we have no chance of participating in this manner.”
As per FIFA president Gianni Infantino, U.S. President Donald Trump conveyed that Iran was “welcome” to compete in the World Cup, in spite of the prevailing tension. However, Trump informed Politico that he does not “care” about Iran’s participation.
“I really don’t care,” the Republican told the publication in March 2026. “I view Iran as a country that is severely weakened. They are barely functioning.”>
