It can withstand two elephants, but is afraid of moisture: what human hair is really capable of

We see our hair in the mirror every day, but we don't even realize what it's actually capable of. It's not just a part of our appearance, but a real biological archive and a super-strong material that can withstand even elephants.

Fact #1. Hair and weather

In warm, sunny weather, hair grows a little faster than usual. This is because the heat stimulates blood circulation, and the sun promotes the synthesis of vitamin D3.

In humid weather, such as when wet, a healthy strand of hair can stretch by 30% of its original length.

Fact #2. In ancient Rome, hair was lightened with excrement

In ancient Rome, being blonde was highly regarded. Wealthy Romans even applied gold dust to their hair.

Dyes of other colors were made from berries, henna, and crushed walnut shells. But hair was lightened with pigeon droppings.

It's a good thing that even though they didn't guess to make black paint from dog and human excrement, they only used leeches and vinegar: they applied this mixture to their hair and sat in the sun until it dried completely.

Fact #3. Hair does not fall out due to dyeing (you have to try hard for this)

For hair to fall out due to dye, its components must reach the bulbs, which are located 3-5 mm deep in the scalp.

If the synthetic components of the dye get to such a depth, not only will the hair fall out, but the skin will also suffer severe burns. You will have to visit a doctor.

In order for the paint to penetrate the bulbs, it is enough to leave it on for longer than indicated in the instructions.

If you dye your hair correctly, according to the instructions, only the hair shaft will be damaged (and even then, this mainly concerns lightening). The hair will become porous and dry, but it will not leave our skin.

Fact #4. Hair can tell a lot about a person

Hair is made up of carbon (50%), oxygen (21%), nitrogen (17%), hydrogen (6%), and sulfur (5%). Five simple elements, it seems like nothing out of the ordinary. But how does this skin appendage help criminologists and forensic experts solve crimes!

Hair carries a lot of information about a person. Moreover, information about drug use is stored in hair for the longest time. If the presence of drugs in the blood can be detected within 3 hours after use, in urine – within 48 hours, then this information is stored in hair for several months.

It's funny, but it's impossible to determine a person's gender by their hair, because there is no difference in the structure of male and female hair.

Fact #5. Black hair pigment is the most common in the world

Red pigment is found in only 1% of the population, blond hair in 2%, and black pigment in the rest.

Fact #6: Split ends, dry and brittle hair have scientific names

Split ends – trichotylosis. Dry hair – trichoxerosis. Brittle hair – trichorexis.

Fact #7. Many people are worried about the problem of baldness

The fact that there is a lot of hair in the bathroom or on the floor is not a reason to worry. Absolutely.

Don't beat yourself up about the fact that there was little hair in the bathroom in the winter, but in the spring it just comes out in clumps after every wash.

A long hair “folds into several hairs” visually. Also, I have not yet met people who put their hair in a bag every day, count it and mark the amount of hair that has fallen out.

40-150 hairs per day that leave our head is normal.

And whether you have alopecia or not — trichoscopy will show. And not your eagle eye. If there is a place in your city where you can sign up for trichoscopy, then ask what device the diagnostics will be performed on and what optics. If the optics are Korean or German (for example, FotoFinder) — feel free to sign up. These manufacturers make the best optics for diagnostic equipment.

Baldness becomes noticeable when 50% of hair is lost.

Fact #8: Your hair can withstand two elephants

The average person has up to 150,000 hairs on their head. Each unthinned hair (0.05 mm thick) can hold 100 grams.

Girls are afraid of silicones in hair products that straighten and add shine. They say they weigh down hair and can lead to baldness. But in fact, our hair can pull two elephants out of a pit with our hairpins.

Fact #9. Androgenetic alopecia (AGA) is not yet a sign of serious baldness

It is simply a condition that is the most common form of hair loss.

AGA is diagnosed in every third person. It's not a big deal for the body. But I know that AGA drives people into depression, and strangely enough, it drives men into depression.

There is an opinion that genetics decides who has thick hair and who doesn’t. And science confirms this. Androgenetic alopecia has a proven genetic nature: the sensitivity of follicles to dihydrotestosterone is inherited. This is a polygenic disease (it depends on many genes), so everything is not so simple, but to deny the influence of heredity is to go against evidence-based medicine.

But it's better not to get depressed, because stress causes another type of hair loss – telogen (diffuse), although it is not a direct cause of AGA. This has been proven.
