Why you should stop buying hair dye at the supermarket and switch to professional dyes

And why it's worth looking at professional tools.

The first difference between household dyes and professional ones is that household dyes are universal. This is not always good (frankly, always bad). When choosing paints from the mass market, you first of all look at the color and price, but most of you do not pay attention to what oxidant is inside the package.

Most often, a box of household hair dye contains a higher percentage of oxidant than necessary. Blonde hair dyes contain 12% oxidant, red hair dyes contain 9%, and dark shades contain 6%.

And besides, few people look at the initial tone and condition of the hair, whether there is gray hair, and these are very important nuances that determine the percentage of oxidant you need.

For example, if you are dyeing your hair dark and there is no gray hair, then you do not need a 6% oxidant, which does not have the best effect on your hair. When dyeing with professional dyes, colorists rarely use high-percentage oxidants, they select them taking into account your base and try to minimally injure your hair. As well as if you have uneven hair color, have gray hair or you want to change the color – with the help of mixtons and a properly selected oxidant, the colorist will easily do this.

Many people choose household dyes because of their affordability, but behind this affordability lies the composition of the paint, in which you will not find anything good. And if there is, then in very small quantities, added only for the sake of a catchy phrase in advertising.

Many professional dyes contain oils and care ingredients.

In the composition of professional paint (especially Italian), the formula is calibrated much more precisely: the balance of pigments and the care base allows for minimal damage to the hair (unfortunately, you can't do without damage when dyeing). However, household dyes are often characterized by an unbalanced composition and excessive aggressiveness of the components (as evidenced by their low cost).

Most mass-market hair dyes have a strong ammonia smell that can linger on your hair for a long time. Even washing your hair won't immediately get rid of it.

Therefore, the aroma of professional dyes is often softer and sometimes even pleasant. For example, my paint smells like berry yogurt. And of course, you will not torment yourself and those around you with a thermonuclear smell, it is washed off immediately after painting. However, I want to say that not all manufacturers of professional paints are so careful about the fragrances in their products: I came across one dye, the smell of which was washed off only after the third time.

If you've come to your senses and decided to give up dyeing with household dyes, then things aren't so simple here either. Due to the huge amount of pigment that has become deeply embedded in the structure under the influence of a strong oxidant, it's sometimes difficult to remove the color that's firmly embedded in your hair.

You probably thought that this is great. You rejoice early: this oversaturated color makes the hair visually “flat”, and its accumulation dries out the length. Even if you conduct an experiment and dye one half of the girl’s hair with household dye, and the other with professional dye, the quality of the hair will differ enormously. And it goes without saying that you have been using only your favorite dyes from the nearest supermarket for many years, and your hair is in excellent condition. I give 5% to the fact that you are lucky and have very thick and good hair by nature. And 95% to the fact that we have different concepts of healthy and beautiful hair: what seems to you to be a beautiful head of hair is actually just tired, dry hair.

For those who like to just buy a box with everything you need at once and not bother with anything, it may be a minus that the dye and the oxidant are sold separately. But wait, there is not much that is complicated here, because they are sold in one store, where (if you are lucky) a consultant will help you with the choice. For example, at my previous job we had a colorist who helped with the choice of color and oxidant, taking into account the quality of your hair and the initial color.

In order to achieve the desired shade (or vice versa, to get rid of the unwanted one), a colorist can use mixtones. They are available in every line of professional paints. In the line of household dyes, there is actually a very meager selection.

I would like to draw your attention to the fact that not all professional dyes are so good. Among them there are representatives with not the best composition and smell. We will not exclude the fact that not all hairdressers are excellent colorists, and can seriously spoil your hair by using the dye incorrectly. But that is another topic.
