Get the popcorn ready: 9 top January TV series that will change your evening plans

January promises to be a month of high-profile comebacks and ambitious premieres: from the expansion of the Game of Thrones universe to the unexpected return of The Night Manager after a decade.

The Night Manager (Season 2)

When: from January 1

Perhaps the most high-profile comeback of the year: The Night Manager returns with a second season after 10(!) years. The project, based on the novel of the same name by John le Carré, was released in the format of a miniseries back in 2016. Le Carré himself did not write a sequel, so the BBC gathered a team of writers and decided to create the second season on their own. The plot will once again center on former soldier and intelligence officer Jonathan Pine, who goes on a mission to Colombia. Tom Hiddleston and Olivia Colman will return to their roles, and they will be joined by Diego Calva, Indira Varma, and Camila Morrone.

The Pitt (Season 2)

When: from January 8

After the triumphant success of the first season — record ratings and three Emmy statuettes at once, including the main one for “Best Drama Series” — “Pitt” returns with a second season. Of course, there is no synopsis: each episode is a new medical case that must be solved by an experienced team of doctors. Although watching the characters' relationships is sometimes even more interesting.

“His & Hers”

When: from January 8

The film adaptation of the detective story of the same name by British writer Alice Finney tells the story of a former TV presenter and a police officer who take on the investigation of a murder in a small town. The most interesting thing begins when they begin to suspect each other: it is at this moment that the viewer loses their objective view of the events and is forced to decide which of the two unreliable narrators to believe. Netflix will traditionally release all the episodes at once, so you won't have to suffer for a long time due to the increasing tension. Especially since on the weekend you can afford to watch the entire series in one go.

“Ponies”

When: from January 15

Daenerys Targaryen is going to the USSR: On January 15, the series “Pony” will be released, which will tell the story of two employees of the US embassy in Moscow who investigate the murders of their husbands-diplomats. The events take place in the Soviet Union in 1977. The main roles in the project were played by Emilia Clarke and Haley Lou Richardson. The script was written by Susanna Vogel (“The Spy Who Dumped Me”), and the showrunner was David Iserson, the author of “Mr. Robot”.

Agatha Christie's Seven Dials

When: from January 15

The most British series of the month is “Seven Clocks”, based on the novel of the same name by Agatha Christie, starring Helena Bonham Carter and Martin Freeman. The events unfold in London in 1925: guests gather for the weekend at a country estate, one of whom soon mysteriously dies. The alleged killer has lined up seven alarm clocks next to his body. You shouldn’t expect unexpected plot twists — Christie always strictly adheres to the laws of the genre, but that’s exactly why we love her.

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms”

When: from January 18

While all Game of Thrones fans are eagerly awaiting the third season of House of the Dragon, HBO has produced another project about the universe of George R. R. Martin. The plot of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on the writer's eponymous cycle of short stories, the events of which take place about a hundred years before the beginning of the main series. The main characters are the knight Duncan the Tall and his squire, a boy nicknamed Egg. Under this name hides Aegon V Targaryen – the future king of Westeros and the grandfather of Aerys II, who will be killed by Jaime Lannister. The prequel consists of six episodes, and Martin himself acts as an executive producer together with Ryan Condal – the showrunner of House of the Dragon.

“The Beauty”

When: from January 21

While we are trying in vain to unravel the secret of Ryan Murphy's extraordinary productivity, he is releasing another series. The plot is based on the comics of the same name published by Image Comics. They tell about a world in which there is a disease called “Beauty”, which is transmitted sexually. Those infected become more attractive, but after a while die for unknown reasons. Mysterious deaths will be investigated by Ivan Peters and Rebecca Hall, and a dozen stars will appear in episodic roles: from Isabella Rossellini to Ashton Kutcher and Bella Hadid. We do not know what will come of this, but we are very much looking forward to it.

Shrinking (Season 3)

When: from January 28

And at the end of the month, we can expect the third season of “True Therapy,” a dramedy from the creators of the cult “Ted Lasso” about a psychotherapist named Jimmy, who can help everyone around him except himself. Jason Segel and Harrison Ford will return to their roles, and among the newcomers, “Back to the Future” star Michael J. Fox will join the cast.

“Bridgerton” (Season 4)

When: from January 29

And another long-awaited return is the fourth season of “Bridgerton”. As always, the focus will be on several characters: this time the season will be dedicated to the love story of Benedict Bridgerton (Luke Thompson) and the mysterious Sophie Beck (Yerin Ha). Netflix has again decided to split the season into two parts: the first will premiere on January 29, and the second on February 26.
